The National Security Generation

“When an opponent declares, ‘I will not come over to your side,’ I say calmly, ‘Your child belongs to us already…What are you? You will pass on. Your descendants, however, now stand in the new camp. In a short time they will know nothing but this new community’.”– – Adolf Hitler

Our children who were born on and around September 11, 2001 are now almost eight years old. These children, who we usually refer to as ‘the future,’ have only known a nation that has been engaged in perpetual wars, and to them it is ‘forever.’ How many times a day do they hear and read the word ‘war’? Whether it’s the TV they are tuned in to, or their parents’ daily paper they happen to get a glimpse of, or the radio news program they listen to during their car rides…they can’t help but hear and see ‘wars’: war on terror, war in Iraq, the Afghan war.

……. LA Times reports on Meade High School in Northern Maryland, the first high school in the country to offer a four-year course in Domestic Security. The article’s ‘sexy’ title goes like this: ‘The School Mixes Algebra, Homeland Security.’ The goal is identified as ‘to help graduates build careers in one of America’s few growth industries.’ ……..The story starts getting a bit sadly comical with the following lines:

“New themes even were added to their science, social studies and English classes.” There’s a lot of homeland security issues in ‘Romeo and Juliet,’ ” said Bill Sheppard, the program coordinator. “Like, how do you deal with infiltration in your own family?””

What is this man really saying? We must now prepare our youngsters to detect infiltration; however this infiltration is to be defined by the state, even in one’s own family? Do you remember the loyal Nazi youth who reported their own parents? Didn’t we make hundreds of movies about the Stazi and how they trained the youth to collaborate with them and act as their snitches?

Honduran coup

The high-powered hidden support for Honduras’ coup

The country’s rightful president was ousted by a military leadership that takes many of its cues from Washington insiders.
By Mark Weisbrot             LA Times
July 23, 2009
Powerful special interests have flexed their muscles and confronted President Obama on the most important legislative priorities of his domestic agenda. But this kind of politics-by-influence-peddling doesn’t stop at the water’s edge. And in foreign policy, the consequences can be more immediate, violent and deadly.

Meet Lanny Davis, Washington lawyer and lobbyist, former legal counsel to President Clinton and avid campaigner for Hillary Rodham Clinton’s presidential bid. He has been hired by a coalition of Latin American business interests to represent the dictatorship that ousted elected President Manuel Zelaya of Honduras in a military coup and removed him to Costa Rica on June 28.

Davis is working with Bennett Ratcliff, another lobbyist with a close relationship to Hillary Clinton who is a former senior executive for one of the most influential political and public relations firms in Washington. In the current mediation effort hosted by Costa Rican President Oscar Arias, the coup-installed government did not make a move without first consulting Ratcliff, an unnamed source told the New York Times.

with 5 comments

Jeffrey Smith, Executive Director of the Institute for  Responsible Techhnology www.responsibletechnology.org, is making sure the secret memos written when the FDA was constructing their GMO policy in 1991-2 are finally available to the public.

And Michael Taylor- the new Obama “food czar” was a direct party to the deception and corruption of that FDA process. Smith writes:

dead endHow many times have we read an article like this? hell, how many times have we written one in our heads as yet another atrocity shows it’s American roots?

Tom Engelhardt delivers up An American Hell today: yet another litany of horrors, dishonor, cover-ups, and lost opportunities to set things right.

Lost opportunities embody the irony of the American myth. We truly expect last-minute redemption.  Dream on.

Ban Glyphosate Herbicides Now: Scientists Confirm Potent Hormone Disrupting Effects

with 2 comments

RoundupBy Dr. Mae-Wan Ho   Institute of Science in Society

Latest evidence confirms world’s top-selling herbicide used with GM crops is toxic and disrupts sex hormones at infinitesimal doses; time for a worldwide ban

Scientific evidence of glyphosate and Roundup toxicities piling up

Glyphosate is the world’s top selling herbicide, and Monsanto’s formulations Roundup is used with more than 80 percent of all genetically modified (GM) crops grown globally. But evidence of its extreme toxicity has been emerging within the past decade. Glyphosate was found to kill human placental cells at concentrations below that recommended for agricultural use and approved by our regulators, while Roundup was lethal at even lower concentrations [1] Glyphosate Toxic & Roundup Worse , SiS 26). The herbicide has already been linked with spontaneous abortions, Hodgkin’s lymphoma and multiple myeloma in humans; and in laboratory studies glyphosate caused liver damage in rats. Roundup is also highly lethal to amphibians [2] ( Roundup Kills Frogs , SiS 26).

Recently, the research team led by Giles-Eric Séralini at Caen University in France confirmed the lethality of glyphosate and Roundup formulations to human cells at minute concentrations (down to parts per million, ppm) [3] ( Death by Multiple Poisoning, Glyphosate and Roundup , SiS 42). They also identified three main targets for killing cells: damage to the cell membrane, poisoning of energy metabolism in the mitochondria, and programmed cell death involving fragmentation of nuclear DNA.

DailyKos bans writer for mocking settlements

Update: see my additional commentary on this flap here

July 22 2009 by Cecilie Surasky      Muzzlewatch

What’s up with DailyKos? This isn’t the first time they’ve banned bloggers for writing about Israel and Palestine, but this surely is the dumbest case.  Guess that free trip to Israel really went to their heads.

Mondoweiss reports that Jane Stillwater got booted from DailyKos for making fun of, um, settlements.

Seriously. She made fun of illegal, immoral, ridiculously anti-peace, settlements, and US support for them as in:

“Our American government is currently financing and maintaining a fabulous all-comprehensive housing program that can provide you with modern newly-constructed state-of-the-art housing at either subsidized prices — or free!  And talk about location location location.  This wonderful model housing program isn’t located in undesirable places like the grungy old Boston inner city or shabby run-down parts of L.A.  And, unlike those tacky bankrupt schools in California and Mississippi, this place has outstanding schools too.  And its healthcare services, shopping centers and freeways are also top-of-the-line.

These fabulous new housing programs are located in a place that is sunny, modern, upscale and family-friendly — Israel!

According to USA Today, “Nefesh B’Nefesh, a non-profit organization, provides grants of $3,000 to $10,000 as an incentive for Jews to move [to Israel].  Nefesh B’Nefesh, which means ‘Soul to Soul,’ also helps arrange housing, jobs and schools for immigrants’ children.”

Read my less tongue-in-cheek op-ed here about the real horror of settlements, which, in fact, are made possible through US support.

Shame on DailyKos.

Research Shows Children are Critically Susceptible to Pesticides

pesticides on food

By Michael Jolliffe
NaturalNews.com, July 21, 2009
(NaturalNews)

A new study published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives has revealed that children are dangerously vulnerable to the effects of environmental pesticides, and for far longer than originally suspected.

Scientists at the University of California, Berkeley have discovered that children lack sufficient levels of the enzyme most responsible for detoxifying pesticides up to the age of seven and possibly for longer. Known as paraxonase or PON1, the enzyme is the most important defense the body has against organophosphate chemicals, a major ingredient of the most commonly used agricultural pesticides.
