In Continued Compromise, Failure

compromise-  A concession to something detrimental or pejorative: a compromise of morality.

With the announcement that the Administration will indeed roll over to Republicans once again one thing is ringing true. In the political arena when these “compromises” are reached the only folks that are expected to give anything up are Progressives, and working America. When we had huge majorities in Congress and the White House still Progressives were expected to concede everything. Now it has become apparent that once again we are the only ones to sacrifice. One begins to wonder if this is not the way it was meant all along.

The sad fact is that in the spirit of “bi-partisanship” these were not compromises but capitulations. You see, with a compromise both sides are expected to sacrifice. However, with the weakness and cowardice of our Democratic leadership starting at the top with the President Progressives never receive anything in return. This is called cowardice, not compromise.

Especially when the public as a whole supports your position. On these tax cuts as with the public option, a majority of Americans favored asking the greediest and least patriotic to pay their fair share. Yes, poll after poll showed the American people favored ending these cuts but still our President was too timid to stand up to the Mitch McConnells and the John Boehners of the world who will never be satisfied until we have a two-class society run by the elites. Folks like them and yes, President Obama.

Maybe that is why it is so easy for our President to continue rolling over. I never supported him in the primary because quite simply I heard his centrist rhetoric all along and knew he would never have the gumption to seek the big changes this country desperately needed. Now I wonder if it was actually more than a centrist streak. Yes, one begins to wonder if this President is not really a coward, but actually in capitulation to Republicans he is getting what he really wants. One can only wonder if he has not agreed with Republican ideology the whole time which makes it easier to stab his base in the back so willingly.

Which brings us to the real problem we face. When Barack Obama was elected the main thing that would have saved our country was Progressive vision. It was needed at that time more than any time in the last 50 years. That is why things are not getting better, because nobody will try the Progressive ideas that would create the change we were promised. Instead, Progressives are demonized as the problem when our policies are the only ones never tried because our leaders are too busy “compromising” and getting nothing in return.

Which makes this capitulation all the more painful. You see, these policies have been proven failures. If the Bush Tax Cuts were so effective why did so many lose their jobs and why did the economy crash?? If they are so effective at creating jobs then where are they?? They have been in place for ten years and our country has lost jobs. They are completely ineffective in bringing back jobs because if they created jobs they would be doing it.

The plain and simple fact of the matter is that we have one far-right lunatic party and one center-right party that will brownnose the lunatic party at every turn. I believe now that this is no accident, our leaders in the brownnoser party actually believe in the ideals of the lunatics they just do so behind closed doors. While the lunatics have found a voice and representation those of us on the Progressive side have nothing and watch hopelessly as the far-right gets all their failed policies rubber-stamped and we get the blame when they fail.

I am tired of not being represented. I am tired of being blamed for the problems that beset our country when I fought so hard to keep the policies that caused them from being enacted. I think it is time for Progressives to realize that we have no voice and that if we do not stand for ourselves nobody will. Our President does not care, and those in Congress that do are chastised by him right along with us as he joins with Mitch McConnell and John Boehner to oppose common sense and give themselves a huge tax cut.

Right here and now I pledge that if a Progressive Party forms I will gladly be part of it. The Democratic Party has moved away from what I believe with their cowardice and their centrist leanings. I am not represented. I have no “hope” for “change” because I realize now that I am considered an illegitimate child at the Democratic Party’s family reunion.

One thing I am certain of. I have lost any faith whatsoever in President Obama to fight for our ideals. He seems a lot more determined to fight behind the scenes for the other side and lecture us about it. Absent a Progressive Party I hope to see a primary challenge to President Obama in 2012, a real Democrat I can believe in. While President Obama was a great story and did much to break down barriers that needed to fall as a leader of a party and country he has proven a failure by his willingness to stab his very supporters in the back while cowering in fear to the forces that would never support him no matter what.

In the end unless President Obama and the Democrats find some fire and loyalty to those who got them elected they will only have themselves to blame for going into history as dismal failures. From this point on it is really up to them. My support does not come for free anymore.

  2. The country has been watching to see if Obama can convert that catchphrase into sweeping change of the federal government. At the start of that year he assumed a more populist tone and proposed a spending freeze in his 2011 budget for non-national security programs along with a tax on big banks to calm public furor over large compensation packages. Nonetheless the former community activist and one-term senator from has already ushered in change in a variety of ways through his race as the nations first African-American president and through his potentially revolutionary political tactics that involved reaching out to average citizens through the Internet in unprecedented ways.

    • With any memory at all, we should know Black folks can sell-out just like the rest of us. But I don’t think he prepared for the one-term set-up that came along with his deal……..

The rise of the internet has caused many changes, but claiming Obama and crew used “revolutionary political tactics” is a bit disingenuous. They may have been quicker than some others to take up the tools, but they didn’t invent them, and only public feeling can make them work. Obama’s squandered his mojo and shown himself to be a whiney shill.

Both parties seem determined to choose the unqualified. Statesmen are a thing of the past. Front men are all we are offered. Time for a real change!
